  • LECTURE2022 | PolishClubofAtlanta

Lecture invitation - dr. Michał Głuszkowski. https://torun-pl.academia.edu/Micha%C5%82G%C5%82uszkowski Dr. Głuszkowski works at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Faculty of Humanities, Institute of Linguistics) and conducts research on the Polish language abroad. He is currently on a research internship at the University of Georgia in Athens and offered us a lecture about Polish communities in Eastern Europe ((Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) and Siberia. Polish communities in the East In the territory of the former USSR, one can meet Poles practically everywhere. First, there are the pre-war Borderlands (so called Kresy), i.e. the Vilnius Region, southern Latvia, Belarus, Volhynia and south-western Ukraine with Lviv, Striy, Drogobich, Ivano-Frankivsk (Stanisławów). Then there are the areas which, after Poland regained independence, found themselves outside its borders, but were part of the pre-partition Poland, i.e. Kamieniec Podolski, Zhitomir and others. And Siberia, which, apart from the exiles, was also the destination of voluntary settlers at the beginning of the 20th century. I would like to tell you about the life of Polish communities in various regions of Eastern Europe and Asia, how their Polish language looks like, how they preserve Polishness in better and worse conditions, and show photos from these places. If you are interested, I will present a short summary of the research I am currently conducting on the Polish language in Georgia.
